Our ecosystem

The ITEM institute draws on research teams within 13 research units and connects around 250 staff from Aix-Marseille Université, the CNRS, the IRD, the IRSN and also the Collège de France, the INRAe, SciencePo Aix, the universities of Avignon and Toulon. We also have 7 partner faculties, with over 1,300 students enrolled in the Master’s programmes attached to our institute, and 4 partner doctoral school within our scope, with around 200 PhD students.

Our training initiatives

The ITEM institute offers a range of activities for the benefit of master’s and PhD students in the field: including field schools (professionalisation of training through fieldwork), and immersion internships funded within ITEM member laboratories or in “duo” with a socio-economic structure, thesis grants and doctoral mobility. We also provide students with access to 10 cutting-edge platforms and observatories, and offer an annual support programme for interns funded by the institute: raising awareness of the interdisciplinary approach, training in the “climate mural” tool, etc. We incorporate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into training

Internationally, we are developing close ties with the CIVIS alliance, European civic university. Some of our field schools are international (Sicily, Indonesia), and our students come from over 50 different countries. At doctoral level, we offer theses co-supervised or co-directed with other countries (Spain, Morocco) and doctoral mobility grants.

Mathieu Dumas
PhD students, Chemistry and Environment Laboratory

In addition to providing high-quality theoretical training, the MAEVA Master's degree offered by ITEM includes a number of professional experiences. In particular, I was able to take part in a field school on pollution (POLEMIL) and a Summer school in Indonesia in partnership with UMRAH, which dealt with concrete issues. All this enabled me to go on to do a thesis at LCE, the Chemistry and Environment Laboratory.
